Care Guide
Solid Wood
Depending on many factors solid wood may change dramatically over time. Some woods and finishes darken with UV exposure, some become lighter. Temperature and humidity effect wood in profound ways. Large and repetitive changes in either factor can result in cracking, splitting, rotting, and textural inconsistencies. Luckily, taking care of your solid wood furniture is a simple task.
The Basics
Keep your furniture indoors, away from unfiltered light, maintain consistent seasonal temperatures, and keep interior humidity between 25% - 35%.
Cleaning
Do not use any abrasive cleaning materials and products such as scrubbing pads, steel wool, vim, and barkeepers friend.
To remove surface debris wipe surfaces with a warm damp cloth, or mild cleaning agent, such as soap or diluted vinegar.
Furniture polish may be used and should not effect the finish, but should be tested in a hidden area first.
Do not let cleaning agents sit on surfaces for any length of time.
Wax Finishes
All wax finishes at KERFWORK are applied by hand using Polyx Hard Wax Oil by Osmo. A blend of vegetable oils, waxes, and a small amount of low-odor solvent to improve workability. It is hard wearing and provides an excellent resistance to water, alcohol and mild acids. Non-toxic once cured, the finish is safe for food contact and complies with European standards for child safety (EN 71.3).
Wax finishes are penetrating, which means the natural wood grain is always visible. Wax is not a top coat. It will not chip or peel. Scratches or damage from liquids are easily repaired by applying a new wax coat over the area, without the need for sanding.
